"It's the difference between Audie Murphy and Andy Griffith"

Does the privatization of the military conflict in Iraq, with the employment of as many 'contractors' in the theatre as there are combatant/soldiers, presage the employment of more and more private 'security forces', armed and licensed to shoot, on the nation's streets? Why are the local police more and more resembling military rather than civilian authority figures?
Glenn Reynolds proves the stopped-watch maxim of Insta-punditry. Wooo gnu?

Just remember what George Washington's troops did to the Hessian soldiers.

Iirc that incident is known best for the fact that the Hessians were pretty well-treated after they surrendered in Trenton? Many of 'em settled around there, after the peace. that however is the orthodox story. If there's another, less well known dimension, I wouldn't be surprised. As late as the mid-'90s, when I was teaching at U of OK, many students there professed never to have heard of the notorious Tulsa (Greenwood) race riots of 1921, in which perhaps as many as 1000 black citizens of the city were killed by rampaging whites--some of them flying airplanes and shooting on the wing--inspired to avenge the honor of a white elevator girl, besmirched by disrespect from a black youth.
