Jon Schwartz : The Iron Law of Institutions

The Iron Law of Institutions is:
the people who control institutions care first and foremost about their power within the institution rather than the power of the institution itself. Thus, they would rather the institution "fail" while they remain in power within the institution than for the institution to "succeed" if that requires them to lose power within the institution.
This apparently explains the seemingly (?) destructive behaviors of BOTH the Bushits and the Dumbocraps. It is the larger, umbrella concept under which you may find my favorite example: Elected officials of any party prefer the status quo (under which they won election) to the enlargement of the franchise to include people who had not formerly voted.

Schwarz recounts the implications of these observations here and here. Go! Read!
